NICE set guidelines for weight loss surgery in the NHS. These are that you are eligible if:
1-You have a body mass index of 40 or higher, or 35 or higher in the presence of a significant weight related co-morbidity
2-You have completed a tier 3 weight management programme
These criteria take account of the public cost of providing surgery and are therefore more restrictive than those that apply in private practice where the same financial limitations do not apply. In general you are eligible for weight loss surgery in the private sector if your BMI is 30 or higher.
